Strategic spells are particularly expensive, but you can cast them on the world map whenever you have enough casting points. The other two types of spells don’t require upkeep, but they cost a lot more mana to cast. Be mindful when using a bunch of these spells because their upkeep cost can stack up quickly. All these spells have a mana upkeep cost that varies depending on how many units are affected. Active spells mostly consist of enchantments that remain active until you manually cancel them. Namely, you have your active spells, your strategic spells, and your tactical spells. Age of Wonders 4 spells can be grouped into three main categories based on their type (as opposed to affinity).
